Social bookmarking and Pinterest

Reading the article, "7 things you should know about Social Bookmarking", I would have to agree with the fact that social bookmarking "gives users the opportunity to express differing perspectives on information and resources through informal organizational structures."  I've used Delicious before taking this course.  Overall,  I like Delicious.  It is a good place to collect and share links and websites for future reference.  A social bookmarking site that I find even more user friendly is Pinterest.  Pinterest uses pictures and is linked to other social networking sites.  The appeal of Pinterest "encourages users to keep coming back because the folksonomy and the collection of resources are constantly changing."  This isn't just a shameless plug for Pinterest, but I have used this site for lesson planning on many occasions.  I have also used it for cooking, DIY, and hair styles!  As an educational resource, Pinterest and social bookmarking, simplifies the way we store and share information.  As a teacher, I could create a "board" and "pin" certain materials to assist my students.  Overall, this is a valuable resource.

  1. I had never thought of Pinterest this way, but when you explain it like that I guess it is just a social bookmarking site. I have heard of teachers getting lesson ideas from Pinterest before as well. I'm not sure why I've been so resistant to signing up for that site, but after reading this I might have to snoop around a little bit more. One question I would have if I wanted to use this with my classroom is; if I make a "board" for my classroom and start pinning things to it, can my students see other boards I have created for my account?

    1. I think they would be able to see them. I've made a private Pinterest and one for school!

  2. I am on my way to Pinterest when I finish this comment! Seems like that website is every where I really cant get away from it so I might as well join it. I have neighbors that have built a tree house they viewed on pinterest, they took a flower pot designing ideal from pinterest.
Secondly, maybe pinterest will get me away from other networking sites. But today there are so many resources and information on web. I still need to get use to the book marking, I will probably master it when the class is over and use it forever cause it a good concept.

  3. Good points. I never thought of using Pinterst in this way either. I just got into it a few weeks ago, and yes - now that you mention it - I see how it can be used for social bookmarking. I don't know enough about it right now to be able to use it in my classroom, so I'll have to do a little investigating.
